Painkiller Origin Story
Imagine you’re sailing your yacht through the crystal clear azure waters of the BVI. Off in the distance you spot a little beach bar on the shore. There’s no jetty in sight so you drop anchor, stick a few bills in your shorts and dive into the refreshing water and swim to the shore for a refreshing, tropical libation to whet your whistle.
That’s the Soggy Dollar Bar in the British Virigin Islands. And I’m sure you can guess how it got it’s name. This is the birthplace of the Painkiller. The bar’s owner, Daphne Henderson, created this creamy, fruity concoction that quickly became the signature drink of the islands.
The Navy Rum Connection
What makes the Painkiller truly special is Pusser’s Navy Rum. Crafted to the same recipe used by the Admiralty when it ended the daily rum ration in 1970, a day now known as “Black Tot Day.” This rum is rich, full-bodied, and has a depth of flavor that makes it the perfect base for the Painkiller.
True Story
Sailor, entrepreneur & general lover-of-rum, Charles Tobias snagged the rights to produce Pusser’s Rum in 1979. Determined to preserve the legacy of Navy Rum, Tobias recreated the formula and began producing Pusser’s in the British Virgin Islands. The rum quickly gained a reputation for its authenticity and quality, and got a thumbs up emoji from the premium spirits world.
Tobias’s dedication didn’t stop at the rum. He trademarked the Painkiller cocktail, making sure that any bar or restaurant wishing to serve the authentic Painkiller would do so with Pusser’s Navy Rum. Because when you want a Painkiller, you want it made right. Right?!
