A Legend with a Twist
Classic Cocktail
Ah, the Dark ‘n Stormy TM. Sounds like a great name for a podcast on the history of rum, doesn’t it?! Well, turns out it is and that podcast is in the making and will be coming out soon – so stay tuned. But until then, here’s the recipe to keep your rum thirst quenched.
The Dark ‘n Stormy is a cocktail name that conjures up images of tempestuous seas and dashing pirates, this cocktail is as dramatic as it is delicious. But beyond its bold flavor lies a fascinating history steeped in tradition and a bit of legal wrangling.
It’s basically a riff on a Moscow Mule minus the Moscow (rum instead of vodka) and if you plan on making it with anything other than Goslings rum, get your lawyers at the ready because this cheeky number has been trademarked since 1991 – and their legal team packs just as much punch as the cocktail.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Goslings Black Seal Rum
- 3 oz Ginger Beer
- Lime wedge for garnish
Steps
- Fill the Glass: Fill a highball glass with ice. The more, the merrier.
- Pour the Ginger Beer: Add the ginger beer to the glass. It’s the fizzy, spicy heart of this stormy concoction.
- Float the Rum: Carefully float the Goslings Black Seal Rum on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon. Watch as it creates a striking dark layer atop the ginger beer.
- Garnish: Squeeze a lime wedge over the top and drop it in for a zesty finish.
- Serve: Stir gently if desired, but tradition says to leave it layered. Sip and enjoy the stormy delight.
