The Origin Story
Why rum, you ask?
Well, that’s a good question. I could answer, “why not?” And that’s not just a throwaway response—it’s actually kind of fitting as “Why Not” is a typical beach bum kind of response to doing stuff.
The seed of this project was planted back in 2009 when I found myself on a crazy extended adventure involving an extended sailboat in the Bahamas. With zero sailing knowledge and a hell of a lot of time on my hands due to crappy weather, I needed a project to keep me occupied.
I had put my career as a food photographer on hold for this trip so needed a project. Naturally, I found myself perusing the internet for all things rum—because rum, sailing, and the Caribbean seemed like a perfect match.
What I discovered was that the history of rum is fascinating. Like Netflix documentary series fascinating. (Hint hint)
When my stint in the Caribbean ended, my interest in rum did not. I spent a year on random adventures involving photography, foodie exploits, and further sailing escapades, all the while mentally percolating on all things rum.
Once my adventures concluded, I returned to my food photography business in the UK. My deep dive into rum history led me to propose a documentary, a TV travel show, and various other projects, but alas, none came to fruition.
Fast forward to Brexit. Being a Canadian with an EU passport, I had to leave the UK. I took up an opportunity to open a restaurant in a small town in Northern BC, where I focused on creating rum cocktails rather than delving into rum history—for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, for 6 years. Restauranting is hard work.
Now, I’ve served my time (pun totally intended). With the restaurant chapter behind me, I’m once again ruminating on all things rum. (Oh my word, I’m so puntastic today!)
Thanks to advancements in platforms and social media, new opportunities have arisen. My little rum sprout is evolving into a podcast called “The Dark & Stormy History of Rum.” Depending on when you read this, it’s either coming soon or already available. If there’s no link, you’re getting in early—enjoy exploring the goodies available here on Rumosphere or follow along on Facebook and Instagram.
